Upthegrove blasts proposed airline mergerApril 17, 2008
DES MOINES, WA –
The proposed merger of
Northwest Airlines and Delta Airlines could cost hundreds of jobs in
the Highline area and harm consumers, according to state
Rep. Dave Upthegrove (D-Des Moines). Upthegrove
recently sent a letter to the Washington state congressional
delegation asking them to help block the proposed merger.
In his letter, Upthegrove points out that the merger could mean consolidation of operations, including the possible closure of a Northwest Airlines call center in SeaTac which employs about 300 people. In addition, Upthegrove raised concerns about the potential loss of additional ramp worker and ticket agent jobs. "The potential loss of hundreds of good paying jobs with benefits here in the Highline area is extremely troubling," Upthegrove said. In addition, Upthegrove expressed concern about the possible unfair treatment of Northwest Airlines pilots. "As they merge the seniority lists between the two airlines, I'm worried that Northwest pilots are getting the raw end of the deal," Upthegrove explained. Upthegrove also expressed his support for maintaining employee unions, should the merger be approved. Northwest Airlines employees are all represented by labor unions. Delta employees are not represented by unions. Upthegrove believes there is a serious risk that the employees unions at Northwest Airlines will be "busted" by the new management. Finally, Upthegrove points out in his letter that consumers also may be losers should the merger be approved. "The loss of competition is going to mean higher fares, crowded planes, and lower quality for passengers," Upthegrove said. On April 14th, Northwest Airlines and Delta Airlines announced plans to merge their operations. The merger still needs to be approved by the United States Department of Justice.
