Skamokawa student sees democracy first-hand as Legislative page

April 24, 2007

Kris Parke with Rep. Dean TakkoOLYMPIA - Kris Parke of Skamokawa spent a week from April 9 to April 13 serving as a page for Rep. Dean Takko (D-Longview) of the 19th Legislative District.

Kris, 16, is the son of Lori and Greg Parke. He is an eleventh-grade student at Wahkiakum High School.

“The page program is an excellent opportunity for high school students to experience government first-hand,” said Rep. Takko. “Kris did a wonderful job aiding members. I think he learned a lot about government during his time at the Capitol.”

Since 1891, students have come from across the state to serve as pages in the Senate and House of Representatives.

Students or parents interested in the page program should contact Rep. Takko's office. To serve as a page, a student must:

  • Be at least 14 years old but not yet 17
  • Have permission from their school and from their parents or legal guardian
  • Be sponsored by a member of the House or Senate
