House continues to “build” on affordable housing efforts Springer’s bill would give local governments another tool
to promote affordable housing February 14, 2006 Continuing to build on the passage of his Home Security Fund which devotes $100 million over four years to affordable housing in Washington—Rep. Larry Springer (D—Kirkland) and his House colleagues passed a measure to give cities and counties an additional tool to promote affordable housing. “The push for affordable housing in Washington can not just come from the state level,” said Springer, prime sponsor of the measure. “Local governments need to find a way to encourage developers to build homes that an average family can afford—this bill is a step in that direction.” House bill 2984 allows local governments to grant exceptions to local zoning regulations if developers will in turn build affordable housing. Currently local governments can offer incentives, but the bill would set down framework to further help with those efforts. “Real gains in affordable housing can come from these and similar incentive programs,” said Springer. “We need to see the public and private sector come together to create a long term solution to rising home costs. Washington families deserve as much.” The bill passed out of the House by a vote of 60-to-38 and will face further consideration in the Senate. ### For interviews: Staff Contact: Information on HB 2984: Radio and TV News Directors: To obtain broadcast-quality audio on this issue, or to arrange for TV or radio interviews, please contact Dan Frizzell, caucus broadcast coordinator, at frizzell.dan@leg.wa.gov or (360) 786-7208. |
