Beach Management Districts awaiting Gov’s signatureMarch 13, 2008 OLYMPIA – Earlier this week the Legislature passed House Bill 3186, sponsored by Rep. Sharon Nelson (D-Maury Island), which allows the formation of beach management districts. “Rotting sea lettuce is a very real problem in Fauntleroy Cove, as well as in Federal Way at Dumas Bay. Anyone who has experienced the nauseating stench during the summer knows that it is long past time to deal with this issue.” said Nelson. “I’m glad we were able to secure $294,000 in the Operating Budget we just passed to implement the bill and finally deal with this pollution problem that affects so many people in these two areas.” Sea lettuce can grow uncontrollably and as it dies it kills sea life, makes the beaches unusable, and causes human health problems. Nelson’s bill will provide the city and county with tools to address the clean-up of the beaches by careful removal of aquatic plants and vegetation. The bill will allow state agencies to work together, which will increase efficiency and minimize impact on marine life. Nelson also stated that Senator Tracey Eide had been key to getting this legislation passed. “Senator Eide has been working on this issue for a number of years. As this was my first legislative session, she immediately offered to assist me in getting this legislation passed to benefit our communities.” House Bill 3186
has gone to Gov. Gregoire’s desk for her signature. |
