$3.5 million in Capital Budget for 34th Legislative District

February 25, 2008

OLYMPIA – The 34th legislative district won support for two of its priorities in the supplemental capital budget approved by the House of Representatives today.

“These projects will make a big difference for our community!” said State Rep. Sharon Nelson (D-Vashon Island).  “Despite the fact that this was a lean budget year, these two major projects will receive funding.  While many worthy projects did not make the cut, I am pleased that these two will move forward thanks to the hard work of the delegation from the 34th District.”

Greenbridge Early Learning Center
The capital budget includes $2 million for the construction of this center. The building is critical to the Thrive by Five Washington early learning demonstration community in White Center. It will be a statewide hub for demonstration and training of best practices in early learning for families and other caregivers. The community will also benefit directly through services for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, pregnant women, new mothers, families and child-care providers.

Highline West Seattle Mental Health facility relocation
$1.5 million in the capital budget will go toward the design and site preparation for the new Highline West Seattle Mental Health facility offices and service center. It will relocate from its current location in Burien’s northeast redevelopment area to a new campus in the city.

The local gains in this year’s supplemental budget come on top of big wins funded in the main capital budget that became law last year. All in all, the 34th District will have received more than $12.1 million in capital project funding in 2007-08, if the supplemental budget is signed into law.
