Bill passes ensuring gas stations will stay open during power outagesMarch 13, 2008 OLYMPIA – A bill passed the Legislature on Tuesday that will help gas stations remain open with emergency power after severe weather and other disasters. House Bill 2053 was written as a response to the 2006 winter storms, which left tens of thousands of western Washington residents without power, and many short on fuel. Rep. Roger Goodman, D-Kirkland, is the primary sponsor of the bill to bring additional emergency preparedness to communities. “It’s crucial for public safety that gas stations stay open after a disaster and during power outages,” Goodman said. “Some folks may need gas to get loved ones to a hospital or just to a safer environment, but many others will need fuel to power their own generators to stay safe and warm in their own homes.” Under House Bill 2053, an owner of gas stations with four pumps or more installing back-up generators could receive a credit up to $25,000 or 50 percent of the cost, whichever is less, towards their business and operations tax. The program would be capped at $750,000 for every two-year state budget cycle, and at least 30 stations would be able to apply this year. “This is a very sensible program,” said Goodman. “I think when we take into consideration two straight years of terrible weather, these are very small investments to keep our community as safe as possible.” Goodman’s proposal now goes to the governor for consideration.
