Statement from Rep. Bill Fromhold (D- Vancouver) on I-747
ruling
November 9, 2007
Yesterday, the state Supreme Court
overturned I-747, the 1 percent cap on annual property taxes
collected by state and local governments which voters approved in
2001.
Washington’s property owners are clearly
concerned about rising property taxes. At a time of increasing gas
prices, spiraling health care costs, and a nationwide mortgage
lending crisis, the last thing they need is uncertainty about how
high their property taxes may go now that I-747 has been overturned.
In light of the court’s decision, I hope
local governments will exercise restraint and not drastically
increase property tax levies. They should give the legislature an
opportunity to address the issue first thing in January. Together
with my colleagues, I will work to pass legislation that will
reinstate the status quo, while taking a longer range look at the
property tax system as a whole.
