OLYMPIA – Bellevue would receive funding for emergency generators under the proposed House budget unveiled on Wednesday. It includes $500,000 for generators to help convert city facilities into shelters during emergencies.
Rep. Deb Eddy, D-Kirkland, sought funding for the project in this year’s budget.
“Bellevue is a hub where people will come, expecting help, in the event of a major disaster like the December 2006 storm,” Eddy said. “Ensuring adequate back-up power for essential shelter is an important public safety goal. This funding will help.”
The $500,000 grant will help the City of Bellevue purchase generators and also upgrade facilities to hold the new equipment.
Senate Democrats will release a proposed budget next week. The legislative session is set to end March 13. Concurrence on what will be included in the final budget will be negotiated between Senate and House leadership.
“This is an important public safety measure in a densely populated part of the state,” Eddy said. “Many people can’t be self-reliant during long power outages, and we need to make sure we’re prepared to provide support.”
