New capital budget: Democrats propose well over $2 million for 19th District

Takko and Blake announce additional construction projects

February 20, 2008

OLYMPIA – Two Southwest Washington legislators today (Feb. 20, 2008) said the just-released supplemental capital budget proposes more than $2 million for new projects in the region.

“The proposals in this capital-budget plan feature $210,000 in funding for Department of Community, Trade & Economic projects in our communities,” said state Rep. Dean. Takko, D-Longview.

Introduced in a state House of Representatives Democratic Caucus press conference early this afternoon, the proposed supplemental capital budget also features “just under $2 million for a Washington State Historical Society project,” noted state Rep. Brian Blake, D-Aberdeen.

“These are vital projects in our coastal region,” said Takko. “This is very important work in communities all across our state. We’ve got to maintain solid facilities and keep pace with the need for improvements in our infrastructure.”

Blake is a member of the House Capital Budget Committee that will soon take a first thorough look at the new construction plan. He said that writing the capital budget “is one of our legislative duties that has an immediate impact on every community’s economy.

“Besides the importance of this budget for our infrastructure,” Blake pointed out, “the capital budget creates many family-wage jobs for a lot of folks who make their homes in our communities.”

This supplemental capital plan features $110.3 million for projects around the state.

Takko said the 19th District proposal would be on top of the more than $20 million that the district received in the original capital budget last year.

One of the items in the supplemental capital budget plan, a $150,000 city of Longview request, is needed for channel-deepening (i.e., dredging) of the Cowlitz River. The twice-a-year dredging is essential because of a continual build-up that comes from Mt. St. Helens.

Another project, a $15,000 Westport South Beach Senior Citizen Center request, is needed for purchase and installation of a generator and fuel tank for the center’s Comfort House.

“The December storm really showed us the need to have a central shelter on the South Beach area,” said Rep. Blake, “and I'm glad we’re going to be able to help with the project.”

Here are the 19th District projects in the supplemental capital budget proposed by the House Democratic Caucus today. (The new projects in the proposal are highlighted and in bold type.)
